She had only been out here for a few weeks when she felt the beginning signs of her body starting to betray her.

She was beginning to come down sick with something and that could only be a bad thing stuck in the past like this. She focused on gathering supplies and finding a shelter where she would be safe for a few days. She didn’t think it was anything serious, just a cold from being more exposed to the elements or maybe an illness from not eating things she had been used to eating. She had been careful about what she ate since being here, but there wasn’t really a way to make sure that she ate only things that her body would agree with. There were too many factors at work here that would make that almost impossible.

She managed to find a small cave that was hard to get to. It took her awhile to climb the cliff to get to it because her body was already ready to collapse. She kept pushing herself, knowing that she needed to get to safety before she could give in to the luxury of collapsing on the ground for awhile.

Once in the cave, she realized it was better for her needs than it had appeared from the ground. She was forced to crawl over boulders to get through the opening of the cave, and it was a little larger than she had expected it to be. She moved back as far as she could go and started setting up her space against the farthest wall. She made a small fire for warmth and dug a hole as deep as she could not too far away. She was pretty sure that once this hit, she wouldn’t be able to go far.

She was right.

Abby didn’t know how long she was sick, but she would say later that it seemed to go on and on forever. It was one of the first times she was truly scared. It’s bad enough to be sick in a strange place, but it was worse when you’re all alone and have no one to help you.

It was one of those times that she kept the handgun close to her body at all times. If anything happened, the fossil records would just have to deal. She was in no condition to fight predators with sticks and blades.

She felt even worse when she was feeling like everything in her body was turning against her – and no one back home would ever know what had happened to her. Having her body betray her when she needed it most was something that she fought hard to deal with.

After the worst part of the illness was over and she seemed to be on the mend, it was still a few days before she was well enough to leave the cave. She didn’t want to come face to face with a predator when she wasn’t at her physical best. She drank the water she had managed to bring with her and she nibbled at things that were in her pack and that she had gathered when the illness first started coming on.

She stayed in the cave for as long as she could, but she needed to move on. The nights were getting colder and she needed to find a better shelter – and stock up on food and water somehow. She couldn’t do that from her current location. There was the additional worry of snow, and Abby knew that if she got trapped by snowfall in the cave, she would never get out.

On the morning she was ready to leave what had been her home for several days, she carefully extinguished the fire and filled in the hole she had dug. When she had everything taken care of as she thought it should be, she shouldered her pack and began the descent from the mountain cave.
