He thought this Carson guy was the world's biggest idiot.
From where he was standing, he could see the couple saying goodbye and he didn't much like the sadness that he saw on the girl's face. She looked like she wanted to cry, but something was stopping her from breaking down. She looked so sad that he was tempted to approach her and pull her into a tight hug and promise never to let her hurt like that.
He didn't though.
First of all, that wasn't his girl. For all that she was Savannah -- at least this place's version of her -- she wasn't his. She belonged to the dumb ass that was breaking her heart and getting on a military plane. Second, well, he wasn't even supposed to be here.
Why was he, then?
Unbeknownst to his wife, he had kept up close ties with the version of Sean that they had met at the wedding. Now, he knew Savannah did as well, but there were things that Sean told him that he couldn't bring himself to tell the other version of his sister. Both he and Johnny thought it would be too much for her to know some of the things that the other version of Savannah had gone through. Knowing that one version of her had died while trapped in the past was more than enough to Johnny's way of thinking. So, when Sean had called their place drunk and angry, it was lucky for all of them that Johnny was the one that had answered the phone.
"He's breaking her heart," was the first thing Sean had said to him. "He's breaking her heart and she's being stupid noble and letting him fucking do it."
Making sure his wife was still sleeping, Johnny had slipped out of the bedroom with his cellphone so that he could talk to his pseudo brother-in-law. "What's happened?" He really didn't like the sound of this.
"He's leaving her," Sean cursed. "He's leaving her to go into some special military program where they won't be allowed to see each other for months or years."
Johnny blinked. "Months or years? What the hell?"
"Some damn secretive military project that he's all excited to have the chance to get into. Hell, I'd probably be excited for him too -- if it wasn't that fact that he's tearing my little sister's heart to fucking shreds."
"Didn't she ask him to stay?" What? It made sense to him. There was no way he'd let something keep him from seeing his girl for months, much less years.
"No," Sean grumbled. "She says it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for him and that she has no right to ask him not to go. So they're breaking up and he's going to disappear into the sunset next week."
"She's more important than some damn military secret."
"Johnny," Sean slurred through the phone. "It's not like with you and Savannah. They love each other very much, but the link that you two have... they haven't had time to form anything like that. This Savannah, she's so quiet and accepting of most things that happen around her. If she fights or raises her voice, it's only because someone is in trouble -- or Dad is pushing her too much. Your Savannah, do you think she would just accept you walking out of her life?"
"It. Wouldn't. Happen."
"He's leaving her and there's nothing I can do to help the hurt. She said she was going to drop out of Art School, but I told her she couldn't do that. Piper backed me up. Broken hearted or not, she'll work for my family's Cabal over my dead body."
Johnny stiffened at that idea. "Excuse me?"
"Kristof and Thomas offered her a job with the Cabal. They want to train her to be an enforcer -- protecting the family and tracking down undesireables." Johnny could hear Sean pouring another drink through the phone line. "I refuse to allow it. The people that work for my father and grandfather would push and twist until everything that makes her the person she is will no longer be there."
"Oh hell no."
"That's what I said."
Now though, as he watched the scene, there was nothing more that he wanted to do than fix everything that was going wrong here. He watched Savannah kiss Carson one more time -- and did that ever seem wrong to him -- and then she turned, getting into the car that was parked near the plane. She started up the engine and drove away. He was glad to see that Carson had enough sense to make her leave first. There was nothing right about her having to watch as he flew out of her life.
When he was sure that they were alone and that there was no one around, Johnny stepped in front of Carson.
"Dude, you are a goddamned moron and I should kick your ass right now."
