The aches and the feeling of being too warm no matter what she did was starting to really get to Leah. No matter what she did, she just couldn't get comfortable or make herself feel better. Thinking that she was coming down with a cold or the flu, she had taken to drinking cold medicine and drinking a lot of fluids. So far, nothing was working and the feelings just seemed to get worse and worse.

Frustrated, she slammed out of her house and jogged off into the woods. The forest usually worked to soothe her and make her feel more grounded. However, that didn't seemed to be happening today -- and the shrill scream that echoed through the trees promised her that it wasn't going to be getting any better.

Almost without thinking about it, Leah kicked herself into a full out run. If someone was being attacked in their woods, she had to do something to help. The scream had been full of enough fear that it triggered some sort of unknown protective instinct within her. When she burst through the trees into the meadow, she skidded to a stop. Taking in the scene of attack in front of her, she felt her eyes narrow in anger.

Bella -- Chief Swan's daughter, Jacob Black's best friend -- was under attack. She was trying to struggle with the man who had grabbed her, but Leah could tell that it wasn't going to do her any good.

Everything suddenly began happening so fast.

The sickly sweet stench hit her nose and her eyes widened. Vampire. The hiss that had started in her throat when she had been ready to yell at the attacker turned into a series of low growls from her chest as the vampire lifted his eyes to hers in surprise. Leah didn't know what exactly was going on, but she was aware of something strange happening to her body as she flew through the air at the vampire.

She heard screams and smelled blood as everything around her seemed to be swallowed up by the dangerous red haze enveloping her...

...When the haze cleared, the first thing Leah was aware of was how different everything looked. That was followed by the fact that she could taste blood in her mouth. Shaking her head in confusion, she got to her feet and looked around. She wasn't sure what had happened as her memories following jumping at the attacker were still fuzzy and unformed.

However, when her eyes fell first on the dead vampire and then on Bella's broken and bleeding body, the memories came rushing back in a flood of horror.

A wolf. She had turned into a wolf.

She knew the legends of her people... had thought they were just stories. She wanted to continue to believe they were just stories, but the images flashing through her head wouldn't let her believe that any longer.

Nausea rose up in her throat as she stumbled to Bella's side. She dropped to her knees beside the girl and then covered her mouth with her hand as she moaned.

She remembered the screams and the smell and taste of blood as her claws and teeth had ripped at flesh.

Had ripped at Bella's flesh.

Jacob was going to kill her for this. He was very attached to and protective of Bella. Hell, Sam might go ballistic on her about this, as well. She knew how serious he took being a protector -- and Bella hadn't been a threat to any of them. She was an innocent.

"Bella! Oh god, Bella!" Even as Leah called her name, she knew she wasn't going to get a response. There was too much blood and torn flesh for her to be conscious. "Bella, I'm so --"

So what? So sorry for killing you?

Because there was no way she could see anyone surviving all of the damage Bella's slight body had sustained during her phase.

She had to call someone. She had to try and get help for Bella -- she couldn't just leave her like this. She also couldn't risk trying to carry the girl to help. She could smell the blood and she had no idea what might cause her to become a wolf again.

She stumbled to where she last remembered standing in the trees. She found her clothes and her shoes shredded into small pieces where she had been. Moaning again, she started sifting through the ruined material, searching for her cell phone.

The smell hit her before she managed to find her phone.

"No," she whispered. "Oh no."

It was another vampire, and Leah didn't think she had the strength to fight off a second attacker.
