La Push
For two weeks, she had kept her secret about what had happened in the woods, and hour after hour it was getting increasingly difficult for her not to break down and reveal everything she knew. For two weeks, she had watched as Chief Swan and Jacob hung missing posters all over town and the reservation. She was almost positive that Jacob hadn't smiled once since receiving the news that Bella was missing.
The Pack -- including her little brother -- was assisting in the search for the missing girl as much as possible -- as were some of the families of students from Bella's school. She knew that for Sam and Jacob, finding her was very important. Seth thought Jacob was in love with Bella and as for Sam...
Sam took the responsibility of being a protector very seriously. He had been the one that brought her out of the woods the last time she was missing, and with Billy Black, had made sure that Chief Swan knew that he would be looking out for them. So to Sam, it was doubly important that the pack help find Bella. He had made a promise, after all. He didn't intend to break a promise and he was determined that they would find Bella and bring her home again.
Leah watched all of this and felt even worse than she already did.
She had the truth of what had happened to Bella Swan, but she didn't dare say anything for fear of what would happen. What would it matter to anyone that she hadn't known what she was? What would it matter that her only intentions that day were to save Bella from the vampire? The best of intentions wouldn't matter.
What would matter -- to Sam, to Jacob, to the Pack at large -- was that she had killed Bella and allowed another vampire to carry her body away.
They knew there had been vampires in the area because they could all smell them. Upon finding the first vampire's body, they burned the pieces to make sure that he was fully dead. They smelled the scent of a wolf in the area, but they had assumed the wolf had come upon the scene long after the original attack.
Leah let them believe it and never once spoke up to dissuade them of their belief.
She knew it was wrong and that it would be better in the long run if she just told everyone what she knew about Bella's disappearance. She really did want to tell them, but every time she started to, fear rose up so strong that it seemed to choke her and she couldn't speak past the fear. La Push was the only home she had ever known. She didn't want to leave it. There was also the pack to consider. True, they didn't yet know that she was one of them because she had done her best to keep it hidden. In his excitement one night, Seth had explained to her that in wolf form, the Pack had access to each other's memories and thoughts. There were no secrets in wolf form.
There were no secrets in wolf form.
That had been the only warning Leah had needed. She couldn't afford to shift into wolf form if the Pack were going to be able to see into her mind like that. They'd see what happened and they'd condemn her for it. She'd probably deserve it for killing an innocent, but she was too scared to speak up.
What would it do to her mother or to Seth if she was ran off? If her mother knew what had happened -- what she had become -- she might have her own heart attack. She couldn't lose her mother like they had lost their father.
Leah shook her head and retreated back into the forest where she had started spending so much time. No, no matter what, she couldn't tell anyone the truth about what had happened.
