The absence of another person’s touch was one of the things she had the most trouble getting used to.

Back at home, with certain people, she had been a very tactile person. She needed to touch them to know they were still there after everything they had already been through. It had been her way of letting them know she cared when she didn’t have the right words that she thought they needed to hear. There were many of them that had been much better with words than she was, so she let them know through her touch that she cared about them.

She had different ways of touching them to let them know she was there for them and no touch ever meant the exact same thing. It was such a simple way to keep herself grounded and make sure that they hadn’t lost someone else.

However, back in this time, she didn’t have that luxury. It was another drawback of being the only human being for thousands of years.

She was realizing, now, that there were several things about her life that she had taken for granted and hadn’t given much thought about. Of course, no one could have known what would happen when she, Danny and Connor had set out after Helen. No one had realized at the time that she would lead them into the past; and if anyone had thought any of them would have gotten trapped by a closing anomaly, they never would have planned out this mission.

Reminding herself of those facts didn’t help when she was feeling more alone and dark than usual. Another person’s touch had been such a simple thing back home. Certainly she never thought she would be without that kind of touchstone for her own mentality and sense of well-being.

It wasn’t until she had gone without it for more days than she cared to count that she realized how important such a simple thing really was to her. The act of touching another was so much more a part of who she was than she had ever realized. It meant more to her than she knew.

Now, sitting in a cave watching the rain come down in torrents, she really missed having another person around her.

She could imagine she and Sarah and Jenny having tea, curled up and watching bad romance films on the telly together. Or she could be sparring with Danny and hugging Connor after he did something brilliantly scientific. The three of them would laugh and hug and go find Becker.

Becker.

In a place like this, she and Becker would be sitting shoulder to shoulder with a blanket draped around them as they watched the rain fall. She would be close to him and at some point, his arm would come around her and pull her close. She’d rest her head against him and he’d kiss her hair.

A natural touch. A simple thing.

Something she missed so very much right now.
