After Illyana shoved her inside Peter’s room and shut the door, Kitty found herself face to face with a very shocked Peter Rasputin.

"Kitty? What brings you here?"

"Illyana," she said darkly. "But, uhmm, you're busy, I'll just let you get back to whatever you were---are you packing?" Kitty walked further into the room and looked around. No, this couldn't be happening, not now, not again. She looked at Peter. "You're leaving? But Peter, you can’t go... I mean, where are you going?"

Peter continued to fold his clothing and placed them into a box. "Why can’t I leave, Katya?"

"Well, because... because Illyana needs you. It's not safe around here for a young girl on her own and you're her big brother."

"Illyana is seventeen, Kitty. She hardly needs a hand to walk her around at night. Besides, with her power, I wouldn't be too worried about her safety."

"But..." Kitty scrambled for something to say. "You can't leave her. You're her only family left."

"She has you, and the X-Men, Kitty." Peter turned to look at her. "Besides, it's not like I'm going to be staying far away. I'll visit so often everyone will get tired of seeing me."

Never, Kitty thought. I will never get tired of seeing you.

"But the X-Men...Peter, the X-Men, we need you to stay with us. You're family. You're part of the team."

"And I will always be around if I am needed. Professor X, or Jean, or Betsy can summon me. Illyana can come get me. And Kitty, there are these wonderfully new inventions called telephones and the internet. I know they might be considered a little frightening, but you can call me on the telephone or e-mail me."

She swallowed, fighting to keep her emotions hidden. "It's not the same."

"How so?"

"You'll still be gone."

Peter moved to Kitty's side and touched her shoulder. "Can you give me a reason to stay, Katya?"

Kitty swallowed a sob. I won't do it. I can't. I can't beg him to stay just because I love him and need him near. "We need you..." she whispered.

"Who needs me?"

Kitty looked down. Oh, God, Peter. I've made so many mistakes in the past few months with dealing with us. I try to hide my intensity and my changing feelings, and it makes me seem to have pulled away. My eyes are shadowed when we speak because I try so hard to be in total control. I try so hard to be in control when all I want to do is lose control, crawl into your lap and just tell you everything that I feel or think lately. I won't complicate your life further by begging you to stay. "We...we all need you."

"I see." Peter sighed and dropped his hand from her shoulder. He went back to his bed. He continued packing. I had been so sure that she still cared for me. Perhaps Illyana was mistaken.

"Good luck, Peter," she whispered as she went to open the door. "Please keep in touch."

She opened the door and jumped back as a ball of fire came at her. "Lockheed, wha--?" She looked past her dragon and saw not only Illyana, but Dani, Logan, and Kurt as well. Dodging another stream of fire, Kitty jumped back into Peter's room, shutting the door. "Traitorous dragon," she muttered.

Apparently she wasn't going to be allowed to leave Peter's room without talking to him honestly about her feelings.

"Peter, why are you really leaving?"

"Why are you really here?"

"I asked you first."

Peter sighed and moved the box, sitting down on his bed. He patted the bed beside him and Kitty sat down next to him. "I'm leaving because I'm not needed and there is really no reason for me to stay." He looked down at his feet. "I have no desire to stay somewhere that I am not wanted."

Kitty looked shocked and then took his hand. "Of course you are wanted here, Peter. You belong here. This is your home."

Peter shook his head. "It's not that simple, Katya. I am in love with someone who does not love me. I cannot stay so near to her, it hurts too much."

Kitty swallowed her hurt and disappointment. "I see. Have you spoken to her?"

"I'm trying to."

Kitty felt tears spring to her eyes and she knew she had to leave the room, now. If she didn't leave, she'd make a fool out of herself and start crying. "I--I..." she swallowed. Oh God, she was gonna lose it. She stood up and looked at him. "Peter, take my advice, try to talk to her again before you leave. Don't wait until it's too late. I know how much it can hurt when your timing is off. Go to her, and make her listen." Damn the lucky one whom he loved but didn't know it. And if she hurt Peter, well, I'll make her regret it. He may not love me the way I love him, but I won't accept him being hurt. "Go to her, Peter. Grab her and do whatever you have to do to make her listen to you. Don't let her get away."

Peter grabbed her and pulled her back down on the bed. "For someone so smart you can be so dense sometimes. Kitty, damn it, give me a reason to stay. Tell me that maybe you could come to love me again. I know things in our past have been all messed up. I broke your heart, I nearly killed your last guy... but I care for you. I love you... Just, give us a chance." Kitty was silent and he saw that she was silently crying. Tears were slipping down her cheeks as she stared at him. "I see. I've hurt you again. I apologize, that was never my intention. I just wanted to..."

His words were cut off as Kitty gently kissed him.
