Title: A Father's Concern
Author: [livejournal.com profile] not_from_stars
Rating: G
Fandom: Twilight
Character(s): Charlie Swan
Word Count: 406
Summary: He thought that he wouldn't worry as much as he did the night she was missing and Sam had found her in the woods -- or the week after that when she wouldn't eat or drink or even respond to anything.
Notes: This was written in response to the "Fog" challenge at [livejournal.com profile] writers_choice this week.

He hated seeing her hurting like this and hated even more that there didn't seem to be anything that he could do to help her or make things better for her.

The most important person in his life and there was nothing that he could do to take her pain away. There was nothing that he could do to lift the fog that she now seemed to be smothered by.

She had always been quiet and introspective, even as a child and he had never worried about it. However, this was different. This was unnatural and painful for him to see.

Oh, to be fair, she wasn't missing school or work. She was getting straight A's and she kept up with her self-assigned chores around the house. Truthfully, she really did give him very little reason for complaint.

Except.

Except for the pain he could always see in her eyes everytime she looked at him. Except for all of her CDs that he had found in pieces in the trash -- and all of her precious books that he knew were now sitting in a box in her closet. Except for the fact that sometimes the smallest thing or word could make her flinch.

It hurt him deeply to see that -- hurt him even worse when he heard her nightmare screams at night. He would go in and soothe her as best as he could, waiting to let his tears have reign until she was resting as peacefully as she ever had and he was back in the privacy of his own room.

He had thought that nothing would be as bad as how he felt the night Bella ran out in her emotional upset about Edward -- though after the two of them talked, she did tell him that she was happy living with him here in Forks and that she didn't want to leave. He thought that he wouldn't worry as much as he did the night she was missing and Sam had found her in the woods -- or the week after that when she wouldn't eat or drink or even respond to anything.

But this, this was so much worse and he hated the fact that he couldn't fix it for her or make it all better.

Charlie Swan wasn't really one to hate any person. That wasn't part of his make up.

But right now, he really hated Edward Cullen.

I enjoyed reading Charlie's point of view during this time and what he endured while watching Bella. It was in character and his pain, distress and feelings of utter helpness really came across. And the last three lines? Charlie Swan wasn't really one to hate any person. That wasn't part of his make up.

But right now, he really hated Edward Cullen.

Seems what Charlie must have felt then - very realistic. So thank you!
