The first time Cassidy loved someone outside of her family or the Dark Court, she thought it was real.

Her Consort had been a handsome man and she believed everything that he had told her about how she was beautiful to him. She believed him, because it didn't occur to her that someone being that intimate would lie to her -- even if she had thought herself plain and not pretty like other Queens. She had loved her Consort with all of her heart and she had believed him when he said he cared about her in the same way.

It was the first time she had been in love.

The first time she had her heart broken, it was also because of her Consort. Her Consort who gave back the ring after his service time was up so that he could go serve in another Court with a Queen who matched his ambition. Her Consort who was surprised that she had believed he loved her or had enjoyed being with her in the bedroom.

When he told her how he really felt about her, she could feel part of herself breaking away. She didn't understand how they could have shared the things that they had, only for it to be turn out to be nothing but a lie on his part.

It was the first time she had been betrayed by someone she loved and she vowed that the first time would also be the last.

She would never allow herself to be that weak again. She would never again trust someone with her heart.
