Alice looked at him and then looked at her siblings. She was torn about what she should do in this situation. On the one hand, Edward loved Bella and it would destroy him if anything bad happened to her. If she died, he would be heartbroken and do something even stupider than he already had. On the other hand, if he hadn't been stupid in the first place and never made them leave Forks, Bella wouldn't be in the hospital with Carlisle fighting to save her.

"I'm not sure that we should right now," Alice said. "At least not until we know what her condition is. I don't see her dying, but we all know that my visions can end up changing because something small changes. I don't think we should track him down and allow him to come here until we know better what's happened and how she's going to be."

Rosalie nodded. "Besides, he didn't care enough to stay with her in the first place and prevent shit like this from happening."

"I thought you didn't want him to be with her, Rosalie," Alice said, looking at her sister seriously.

A small growl came from Rosalie's throat. "I didn't... I don't... damn it I don't want to have this discussion right now! The main thing we should be thinking about is what we're going to do about this. "

"What do you mean, what we're going to do about this," Jasper asked in confusion.

"Are you kidding me? A werewolf attacked someone who means something to the people in this family. Surely we're not going to just let it get away with this. Esme alone would be ashamed of us if we don't do something. We all know that she has thought of Bella as being her daughter since the first time she found out about her."

"We don't even know what happened, yet, Rosalie."

"But we will find out, Alice. When Bella wakes up, she'll tell us who attacked her and we can take care of it and make sure it never happens again."

"Your sudden protective instinct towards Bella is starting to freak me out a little bit, Rosalie," Alice admitted. "You've never liked her, and in fact, you hated her for knowing anything about us. All you've done is complain about her ever since the first day you found out about how much Edward was drawn to her."

"She was a danger to us," the blond vampire said sourly. "I thought that Edward was being irresponsible and thoughtless about bringing her around the family and into our lives."

"And now?"

"Now? I spent a day with her bloody body in my arms and the only thing I could damn well think about was getting her to Carlisle so he could save her!"

Emmett tightened his arms around her, leaning his head against hers. "I understand, now," he said quietly. He did. He remembered how it had affected Rosalie when she found him after the bear had attacked him and decided to take him to Carlisle to be changed.

Jasper and Alice were quiet as they watched their siblings. They had heard this story several times and both of them could see why a similar repeat of that event would shake Rosalie as much as it had.

"Esme," Alice suddenly said quietly, lifting her head to look at Rosalie. "Esme would want to know."

"Shouldn't we wait until we know how she's going to be?" Emmett asked.

Alice shook her head. "You know how Esme feels about Bella. She would want to be here, no matter what. Do you really want to see her eyes if she were to find out Bella died and we knew she was here but didn't tell her?"

Emmett made a face and shook his head. Like his siblings, he couldn't stand to see their mother unhappy. It was like something had gone wrong in the universe when she wasn't smiling. Unnatural.

Rosalie sighed. On the one hand, she didn't want to tell their mother that Bella was hurt so badly that Carlisle was doing surgery on her. On the other hand, she knew how much it would hurt her if they didn't tell her and then Bella died. She would want to be nearby the other girl she had adopted as her daughter.

"I can't be the one to call her," she finally said. "I can't."

"Why not?" Jasper's confusion was an echo of what he was feeling from his siblings -- and from Rosalie herself.

"I just can't, Jasper, ok? Just leave it at that."

Jasper and Emmett exchanged glances and then they both looked at Alice. Alice shrugged slightly. She had the feeling that even Rosalie didn't know why she couldn't be the one to call their mother about Bella, just that she wasn't able to. She let out a breath and took her phone from her pocket. Dialing the number, she spoke quietly and quickly when the other end was answered. She gave their mother what information they knew and then hung up the phone.

"Esme is on her way."

They all nodded, none of them surprised by that news.

"We should go inside," Alice said. "Carlisle is going to be looking for Rosalie soon."

"Me? Why would he be looking for me?"

"Because you're the one who brought her to him?" Alice shook her head. "Why wouldn't he be looking for you?"

"Because I wasn't exactly thrilled about Bella when we were in Forks. I assumed he'd call one of you to tell you."

"He probably knows that I would have seen it already and we would have come here," Alice pointed out. As she looked at Rosalie, she decided she wasn't about to tell her sister what else she had seen in her vision. It was obvious that Rosalie wasn't ready for that -- and it was one vision that Alice didn't want to change in any way. "Let's go," she said, heading in the direction of the doors to the hospital.
