whuffle. This is something that just started coming out yesterday. Now I'm not sure to leave it there or continue with the epic story that I see in my head.
It had happened almost too fast for any of them to react. Connor let out a primal yell as he rushed to his feet from the dirt forest floor.
"Open it back up," he was adamant.
Connor had been scrambling away from the creature about to attack him. A blur of movement crossed his peripheral vision as something slammed into the creature's side, knocking it through the anomaly. Before Connor could process what had happened, the anomaly was locked down.
"Let me have the medics check you over. You must’ve taken a knock to the head," Matt soothed. “The creature’s back in its own time now and ARC policy states that no one goes through anomalies any more. Period, end of story. Sorry, mate."
"Listen to me," Connor demanded, urgency in his tone. "Abby tackled the creature. She went through the anomaly with it and now you've trapped her on the other side! Open it back up, Matt!"
At this point Becker arrived from rounding up the other creatures which had come through the anomaly before the ARC staff had arrived. He registered Connor's upset and the confrontation brewing between him and Matt. And then it clicked into place; the only thing that could get Connor that upset was Abby. But Abby was nowhere to be seen. Becker had a moment's disbelief before it all sunk in.
He ignored Matt and focused on Connor. "Where's Abby?" It was the only question he could ask through the clenched feeling of his heart squeezing tight as panic gripped him.
"She saved me, Becker! And now they've locked her on the other side of the anomaly and they won't open it back up so we can get her," Connor snapped. "You don't understand," he pleadingly turned to Becker who had a hand on his arm. "Becker, please. You don't know what it was like. You didn't have to watch her break each time another week passed and we were still trapped there. She's always been protecting and saving me. She lost all hope that we'd ever get back home," he swallowed hard around the lump of memories closing his throat. "She can't go through that again. You've seen her since we came back. This time she's alone and it'll destroy her. I have to save her. We have to save her."
Becker felt the rush of adrenaline as he watched this new, stronger Connor break to pieces like his child-like former self at the thought of Abby facing their shared nightmare again. There was only one decision he could make. He wasn't going to let Connor lose Abby. He wasn't going to lose Abby again.
He rounded on the soldier kneeling by the anomaly locking device. "Open it."
"Captain?"
"You heard me, I said open it," Becker enunciated with all of the precision of his Eton education.
Becker's glare dared Matt to oppose him, but the other man shook his head. He wasn't about to try to stop him. He didn't want Abby trapped on the other side of another anomaly any more than they did.
"Lester, I'm going to go get Abby back," Becker said over the earpiece. "Is there a problem with that?"
"Only one rule: don't get killed," Lester replied. "The last thing any of us want is more paperwork or yet another excuse for Phillip to pay us a visit."
He nodded and tore off his earpiece. He wouldn't need it where he was going. He turned to one of his corporals as he stripped extra gear off his body. "Get the emergency case. We don't know what's over there and I'm not taking a chance with anything but real weapons." He cocked a smirk sideways at Matt before adding, "no offense."
Matt shrugged it off. "None taken." If it were someone he cared for he wouldn't want to take chances with experimental technology either.
Becker rummaged through the case his corpsman had brought over from the truck. A moment later he pulled out a black armoured Kevlar vest which he tossed in Connor's direction. "If you're coming, you put that on."
Connor nodded silently following Becker's lead as he stripped off his extra technological gear and put on the combat vest. Once suited up properly, Connor took the gun one of the soldiers tossed him, efficiently checking it before belting the holster around his waist and cinching down the thigh strap.
Becker looked him over with a critical eye then gave a nod to the division of SAS soldiers who’d been accompanying him earlier. "I'm not ordering any of you to come with me."
One of the men laughed. "With all due respect you just try keeping us out of this one, Captain."
Becker eyed Matt. "If we're not back in twenty-four hours, you close this thing and assume we're not coming back." Matt frowned, but nodded his agreement.
Becker looked steadily back at Connor. "Let's go get our girl back."
After Becker, Connor, and four more SAS soldiers went through the anomaly, Matt turned to the soldier manning the device.
"I don't care how long it takes, that anomaly is not to be closed until they get back or we have proof that they're not coming back."
"But Captain Becker said --"
"In Captain Becker’s absence, I am now the ranking officer on site. And I'm telling you that we are not trapping them over there no matter how long it takes."
The soldiers nodded gravely. Many of them had been working for the ARC before Connor, Abby, and Danny disappeared. They knew the odds, but they also knew that this team took extraordinary glee in defying them.
"Get them home, Becker," Matt said quietly as he watched the anomaly.

Date: 2011-01-11 07:35 pm (UTC)I'm really leaning towards it. I have this scene with Abby in my head where she realizes what has happened.
Thank you! All of you guys at Denial have been so nice and encouraging that I seem to have more bunnies in my head.
