These days, he had the need to run.

Oh, he wasn’t turning away and running from the ARC or from the secrets there. He wasn’t running from the friends he had left. He wasn’t running from the new team members and their curiosity about the ones that had been there before him. He wasn’t running from the fact that Lester had refused his resignation.

Sometimes, he just needed to get out and run.

He would run for the hope that someday his lost colleagues were going to walk, stumble or crawl through an anomaly that would bring them home.

He would sometimes run for the strength to face another day of disappointment when they would be called out to an anomaly sighting and the only thing there to deal with a creature incursion. On those days when he had to deal with the disappointment, he’d run just a little further.

The night of Abby’s birthday, he found himself running further from his own neighborhood than he would usually go. Just that night gave his ghosts more tangibility and he could almost sense them running along and keeping pace at his side.

Going running was the way he found to deal with everything that was happening ; it would keep him from hitting someone when they said something extremely insensitive or stupid. It wasn’t just himself that he was being on guard for. He was also trying to keep Lester, Jenny and Sarah shielded from the worst of the comments some of the new people would say. The last thing he wanted was for someone to tell Jenny and Sarah that there was no way their best girlfriend could survive wherever she was. He wouldn’t like to see what would happen if someone made the unwise decision to tell Lester he would never retrieve his three people from whatever time they were now trapped in.

Sometimes, he just had to run because to not run would mean that he was giving up all hope. To not run like this would say that he didn’t think he would ever see Abby, Danny and Connor again. To not run like he needed to these days that would make him wonder if his friends had at least stopped Helen permanently, or was she hiding out to make new plans?

Most of all, though, he ran because he needed to get away from a pair of blue eyes that he saw in his mind on a constant basis. He ran because he couldn’t give those eyes a better answer to the problem of getting her home. He ran because he couldn’t look at her and tell her that the risks she had taken had all been worth it.

Because, the three of them had risked everything to go after Helen and stop her from doing whatever death and destruction she had planned on unleashing.

He couldn’t look into the memory of those eyes and say that everything she had left behind was well worth it.
